“Why do I love clouds? Because you can’t save a cloud like you can save a leaf or a flower or a rock – clouds are now.”
Terri Guillemets
Beyond the Quote (204/365)
As I sit here struggling to find the right words to write, I find myself looking out the window, captivated by the movement of the clouds through the sky. It’s nothing special. Or it’s something really special? I can’t tell.
Now that I’m writing about it, I’m noticing that this hasn’t been the only time recently when I’ve just stopped and stared at the sky. It’s almost as though the clouds have been catching me off guard. Like I’m a kid again who’s really just noticing the sky in all of its raw, natural beauty for the first time.
It’s almost as though the rolling, recycling, rhythmic movements of the heavenly puffs from above pull me out of the minutia of life and remind me of something I’m forgetting. Something that I have known before and have been reminded of so many times, but have let slip from the grips of my mind yet again. Something that I think we all need to be reminded of because it’s so easy to forget: That life happens fast. And that if we don’t slow down to take it all in while it’s here—we could miss it.
I remember hearing a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson that if the stars came out one night every thousand years, we would all gather and marvel at them in awe and wonder. But, since the stars shine every night, we pay them no mind. I’m not sure why the clouds have been so captivating to me lately, but I feel like it’s a call from inside to slow down and take in what’s here. A reminder to get out of my damn head and soak in the beauty that’s lingering right in front of my eyes.
For, if the clouds only came out once every hundred years (forgetting the devastating affect that would have on life on earth), I have no doubt that we all would be absolutely mind-blown and would gather and marvel in absolute wonder. Why let that marvel fade? Why pay no mind to the wonders of our world? Why stop looking at the world like a kid? Maybe it’s exactly what we all need. Maybe it would do us all some good to mentally go back a few decades? Maybe a day of watching the clouds roll by is exactly what we all need…
