To My Daughter. [Excerpt]

To My Daughter. [Excerpt]

Excerpt: From his book, One Minute, Please?, this list includes 15 things Cole Schafer wants his daughter to know that you might want yours to know, too.

  1. Leave the world better than you found it.
  2. Don’t fuck around with a writer.
  3. Don’t listen to the words men say, listen to their actions.
  4. It’s completely normal if you like women, in fact, I’d encourage it.
  5. Don’t say ‘I love you’ unless you mean it.
  6. I love you.
  7. God exists, look for him outside of religious texts.
  8. When you can, choose to love even when it’s the hardest thing to choose.
  9. Study: Sophia Amoruso, Rupi Kaur, Virginia Woolf & Coco Chanel.
  10. Wear your confidence like Coco wore Chanel.
  11. Find happiness in a room by yourself before you attempt to find happiness in a room with someone else.
  12. You’re a women, you’re playing with one arm tied behind your back, paint your lips and fuck shit up.
  13. Before you get intimate with someone, imagine what it’d be like to have a kid with them (if you cringe don’t get intimate).
  14. Don’t marry someone conservative, their discipline might be enticing initially but you’ll find yourself loathing the closed-mindedness.
  15. Ask your grandfather about your great-grandmother.

If you enjoyed this excerpt, you should read Cole’s book in full—it comes highly recommended:

Book Overview:  A book of poetry by Cole Schafer aka January Black. Written on the back of the book: “To be candid, I’m not entirely sure what the fuck any of this is about. But, if you have a minute… I do think I can make you feel something.”

NEW In The Shop: Don’t Let The Tame Ones Tell You How To Live [Poster]

Why We ♥ It: Some of the best advice I (Matt here) ever got was: don’t take life advice from people who aren’t living a life you want to live and don’t take criticism from people you wouldn’t go to for advice. I created this poster to act as a reminder to listen more closely to our role models and less closely to our critics, trolls, and tamed-comfort-zone-hugger acquaintances. It’s also a perfect gift for the outdoor adventurer, travel enthusiast, or solo explorer (or soon to be). Available in print or digital download. 👇🏼
