Light Quotes

“The goodness inside you is like a small flame, and you are its keeper. It’s your job, today and every day, to make sure that it has enough fuel, that it doesn’t get obstructed or snuffed out. Every person has their own version of the flame and is responsible for it, just as you are. If they all fail, the world will be much darker—that is something you don’t control. But so long as your flame flickers, there will be some light in the world.”

Ryan Holiday, The Daily Stoic (Page 201)

“To the shadow, the light is an enemy. But to the light, the shadow is nothing. It simply does not exist.”

Marianne Williamson, The Shadow Effect (Page 157)

“True light that makes true vision possible is not the light the body’s eyes behold. It is a state of mind that has been so unified that darkness cannot be perceived.”

“You’ll never see the light at the end of the tunnel if you don’t get in that tunnel.”

“There is a time for expanding and a time for contraction; one provokes the other and the other calls for the return of the first… Never are we nearer the Light than when darkness is deepest.”

                  Beyond the Quote (Day 406)

Light is light and nothing in between. Where there is light, there is no darkness. Where there is darkness, there is no light. A light’s intensity might make it seem like there is something in between darkness and light, but “dim” and “bright” are both still expressions of light. Light can’t be exchanged for some other “in between” particle that might do the lighting instead. Light and the various expressions of its intensity are all that there is to dispel darkness. And so it is in life, too.

Carl Jung Quote on How Confronting Darkness Can Show You To Your Light

“To confront a person with his own shadow is to show him his own light.”

                    Beyond the Quote (Day 382)

Like most, I can still vividly recall moments when I was caused a great deal of irritation, frustration, anger, and pain. Times when people didn’t follow through with their word, or when they would treat others unfairly, or when they did things that were irrational, nonsensical, or just plain malicious. And sometimes, those moments would get the best of me and cause an influx of negative, overpowering, blinding emotions. But what I didn’t realize then, that I can see more clearly now, is that the only reason I was able to see those shadows was because of my own light.

“People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.”

Martin Luther King Quote on Light vs. Darkness and Love vs. Hate

“Darkness cannot put out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

                          Beyond the Quote (321/365)

Darkness is not something you battle. It’s not something you fight. It’s not something you can punch, kick, hit, push, shove, or choke. For darkness takes no form. It has no body. It takes no shape. It’s not something that will ever submit. Darkness is an absence—an absence of light. And the only way to combat an absence is with a presence.

“When there is no way out, there is still always a way through. So don’t turn away from the pain. Face it. Feel it fully. Feel it—don’t think about it! Express it if necessary, but don’t create a script in your mind around it. Give all your attention to the feeling, not to the person, event, or situation that seems to have caused it. Don’t let the mind use the pain to create a victim identity for yourself out of it. Feeling sorry for yourself and telling others your story will keep you stuck in suffering. Since it is impossible to get away from the feeling, the only possibility of change is to move into it; otherwise, nothing will shift. So give your complete attention to what you feel, and refrain from mentally labeling it. As you go into the feeling, be intensely alert. At first, it may seem like a dark and terrifying place, and when the urge to turn away from it comes, observe it but don’t act on it. Keep putting your attention on the pain, keep feeling the grief, the fear, the dread, the loneliness, whatever it is. Stay alert, stay present—present with your whole Being, with every cell of your body. As you do so, you are bringing a light into this darkness. This is the flame of your consciousness.”

Matching your moods to the weather of the day is easy—happy when it’s sunny, gloomy when it’s overcast. It’s a very natural response to the sort of feelings each type of weather encourages. How could you not be in a better mood when the sun is shining bright versus when it’s dark and gloomy? And so it is for most of us. But, what if you didn’t have to be in a dark and gloomy mood when it was dark and gloomy outside? What if you could learn to maintain a peak state that was independent of the weather? This is the art of nurturing the light within.

“To tell the truth is to bring the most habitable reality into Being.  Truth builds edifices that can stand a thousand years.  Truth feeds and clothes the poor, and makes nations wealthy and safe.  Truth reduces the terrible complexity of a man to the simplicity of his word, so that he can become a partner, rather than an enemy.  Truth makes the past truly past, and makes the best use of the future’s possibilities.  Truth is the ultimate, inexhaustible natural resource.  It’s the light in the darkness.  See the truth.  Tell the truth.” ~ Jordan Peterson, via 12 Rules for Life (Page 230)

“Do not be dismayed by the brokenness of the world.  All things break.  And all things can be mended.  Not with time, as they say, but with intention.  So go.  Love intentionally, extravagantly, unconditionally.  The broken world waits in darkness for the light that is you.” ~ L. R. Knost
