Beyond the Quote (203/365)
Think about how utterly amazing this idea is: if you decide today, right now, that you are going to commit to growth, self-love, and personal development from this point forward then today is the worst you will ever be. That’s right—only better days from here! The only way you can get worse is if you regress. If you get better and improve, then so will your life. How could this not be the case? Growth is the antithesis of regression. Growth represents improvement, progress, and development. Ultimately, committing to growth is committing to life—a better life.
And what’s amazing about growth, self-love, and personal development is that they’re all within your realm of control. Unlike circumstances and the nature of how you’re born, how you decide to grow and nurture what you’ve been born with can be changed by the decisions you make at any time. This means, as a result of your every decision, you are choosing to either grow or regress in every aspect of your life. And if you want to ensure that you will be kinder, stronger, and braver tomorrow, then all you have to do is commit to growth.
Let growth be the guiding light in your life. There’s so much comfort and hope to be found in this notion of self-improvement. Because even if today was the worst day you’ve ever experienced, the fact that you made it through only means that you’ve made it through the worst of it. Things will only get better from here—believe it! By committing to self-growth and constant improvement, even if harder days come, you’ll be more ready. You’ll be kinder, stronger, braver, and more experienced in handling what’s hard.
If you’re sick and tired of feeling awful physically, then commit to daily physical growth. By doing something every day that’s of benefit to your physical health, you’ll ensure that only better feeling days will come. If you find yourself in a tough place mentally and you’re feeling low, then commit to daily mental growth. By choosing to read, to write, to meditate, or to speak to a trusted adult or therapist, you’ll pave a road forward that will only lead you to a better place than where you are now. Even spiritually. If you feel disconnected and unfulfilled, commit to regular acts of spiritual growth. By finding ways that you can grow your connection to a higher power or to an idea of interconnectedness every day, your spiritual strength will only take you higher.
With this idea, it’s important to remember that there is no “maintaining” where you are. There is no stagnation in life. At all times, with every decision we make, we are either growing and progressing or deteriorating and regressing. That being said, your “commitment” to growth can’t be “wishy-washy.” You have to make your word—your commitment—your promise. It’s the underlying driving force behind the idea that things will get better and those above mentioned feelings of hope.
And don’t let that idea of commitment scare you! It’s a good thing because again, this is an opportunity that’s well within your control that can lead you to a better life. That’s what you want isn’t it? If so, then match your actions to that desired outcome as much as possible. You don’t have to rely on anyone or anything else. Whenever possible, just choose growth. Commit to small, daily improvements. Leave your worst days behind you. Find comfort and hope in the idea that you are in charge of your fate and that you are going to lead yourself to a better, brighter, and more fulfilling future. Starting with the decision you’re about to make right now. I hope it’s a good one.

NEW In The Shop: Don’t Let The Tame Ones Tell You How To Live [Poster]
Why We ♥ It: Some of the best advice I (Matt here) ever got was: don’t take life advice from people who aren’t living a life you want to live and don’t take criticism from people you wouldn’t go to for advice. I created this poster to act as a reminder to listen more closely to our role models and less closely to our critics, trolls, and tamed-comfort-zone-hugger acquaintances. It’s also a perfect gift for the outdoor adventurer, travel enthusiast, or solo explorer (or soon to be). Available in print or digital download. 👇🏼
