Introduction: To mothers, we are eternally grateful
At this point in my life I consider myself to be a grown adult, yet just last week, it took the care of my mom to get me to the doctor’s office (which I was stubbornly avoiding) so that I could get the care I needed to feel better. I feel better now.
When I was a teenager I went through an independence/ don’t-talk-to-me phase and essentially shut my mom out. I was cold and short with conversation but her warmth never faded. She knew how to take a hint and never pushed, but stayed in contact enough where we didn’t grow far apart. I eventually started to open back up.
When I was a pre-teen I stole from my great-grandmother. It was a few bucks and it was selfish and dishonest. When my mom found out she EXPLODED on me in a way I had never seen her explode before (and will hopefully never have to see again). It was a flurry of swear words, tears, and aggressive body language that hit my soul. It was in that moment that I felt my sense of compassion and integrity deepen and my bond with my character become stronger.
When I was a kid I got bit by a dog. It chomped off a part of my calf. I was hysterical. I could have easily developed a strong fear for dogs at that point in my life—but I didn’t. My mom took care of me, comforted me, helped me heal, and reassured me that it was a freak accident. Dogs and I are cool.
…And when I was a baby I was 100% dependent on my mom and dad. Without their care and support I wouldn’t be alive today. Everything that I am is a result of the start that I was given—through them. And for that I am eternally grateful.

Why We ♥ It: Some of the best advice I (Matt here) ever got was: don’t take life advice from people who aren’t living a life you want to live and don’t take criticism from people you wouldn’t go to for advice. I created this poster to act as a reminder to listen more closely to our role models and less closely to our critics, trolls, and tamed-comfort-zone-hugger acquaintances. It’s also a perfect gift for the outdoor adventurer, travel enthusiast, or solo explorer (or soon to be). Available in print or digital download. 👇🏼

Oprah Winfrey
“The art of mothering is to teach the art of living to children.”
Elaine Heffner
“When you’re a child she walks before you… to set an example. When you’re a teenager she walks behind you… to be there should you need her. When you’re an adult she walks beside you… so that as two friends you can enjoy life together.”
Unknown
“Most of all the other beautiful things in life come by twos and threes, by dozens and hundreds. Plenty of roses, stars, sunsets, rainbows, brothers and sisters, aunts and cousins, comrades and friends—but only one mother in the whole world.”
Kate Douglas Wiggins
“There is no way to be a perfect mother, and a million ways to be a good one.”
Jill Churchill
“Mother is a verb. It’s something you do. Not just who you are.”
Cheryl Lacey Donovan
“At the end of the day my most important job is still mom-in-chief.”
Michelle Obama
“Becoming a mother makes you the mother of all children. From now on each wounded, abandoned, frightened child is yours. You live in the suffering mothers of every race and creed and weep with them. You long to comfort all who are desolate.”
Charlotte Gray
“Through the blur, I wondered if I was alone or if other parents felt the same way I did — that everything involving our children was painful in some way. The emotions, whether they were joy, sorrow, love or pride, were so deep and sharp that in the end they left you raw, exposed and yes, in pain. The human heart was not designed to beat outside the human body and yet, each child represented just that — a parent’s heart bared, beating forever outside its chest.”
Debra Ginsberg
“Motherhood: if you think my hands are full, you should see my heart.”

Tim McGraw
“I am closest to my mother, as she is my rock, my pillar of strength, and my world. Not only has she stood by me through all times – happy, sad, and otherwise – but there have even been moments when I had completely lost hope, and her immense belief in me had lifted me up.”
Amruta Khanvilkar
“Your arms were always open when I needed a hug. Your heart understood when I needed a friend. Your gentle eyes were stern when I needed a lesson. Your strength and love has guided me and gave me wings to fly.”
Sarah Malin
“As mothers and daughters, we are connected with one another. My mother is the bones of my spine, keeping me straight and true. She is my blood, making sure it runs rich and strong. She is the beating of my heart. I cannot now imagine a life without her.”

“Teach your daughter to worry less about fitting into the glass slippers and more about shattering the glass ceilings.”

“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still she will cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.”

Quotes on a Mother’s Love:
“A mother’s hug lasts long after she lets go.”
Unknown
“A mother’s love is everything. It is what brings a child into this world. It is what molds their entire being. When a mother sees her child in danger, she is literally capable of anything. Mothers have lifted cars off of their children, and destroyed entire dynasties. A mother’s love is the strongest energy known to man.”
Jamie McGuire
“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.”
Washington Irving
“Mothers, I believe, intoxicate us. We idolize them and take them for granted. We hate them and blame them and exalt them more thoroughly than anyone else in our lives. We sift through the evidence of their love, reassure ourselves of their affection and its biological genesis. We can steal and lie and leave and they will love us.”
Megan Mayhew Bergman, Birds of a Lesser Paradise: Stories
“In 1971, Bossier City, Louisiana, there was a teenage girl who was pregnant with her second child. She was a high school dropout and a single mom, but somehow she managed to make a better life for herself and her children. She encouraged her kids to be creative, to work hard, and to do something special. That girl is my mother and she’s here tonight. And I just want to say, I love you, Mom. Thank you for teaching me to dream.”
Jared Leto
Afterword: Mother’s Day Gifts
Flowers seem to be one of the go-to gifts for Mother’s Day as they express a beautiful sentiment (for a beautiful woman) and bring a wonderful aroma to the household. I’d like to challenge you, however, to buy flowers that are potted or can be planted instead of flowers that have been cut. Osho said it best that, “If you love a flower, don’t pick it up. Because if you pick it up it dies and it ceases to be what you love. So if you love a flower, let it be. Love is not about possession. Love is about appreciation.”
One of the best Mother’s Day gifts I ever got my mom was a small tree that could be planted in our front yard. That small tree has grown over the past several years into the beauty that you can see below—And it flowers every year right around Mother’s Day! It’s the gift that keeps on giving and it could be the stand out gift for you this year! Good luck and happy mother’s day to all!
