How To Upgrade the Quality of Your Mind (and Life)

Dirty & Clean Water

Excerpt: Each sense acts as a floodgate that, when opened, unleashes information. This is the key to learning how to upgrade the quality of your mind.

Each of your senses acts as a floodgate that, when opened, unleashes a rush of information that allows you to interpret and interact with life.

When you open your eyes, all of the visuals from your surrounding environment pour in; when you open your ears, all of the sounds from your environment vibrate in; when you open your mouth and eat food, all of the tastes come surging in; etc.

Once you understand this, two things become evidently clear in learning how to upgrade the quality of your mind.

First: High quality environments allow in high quality information and vice-versa.

If you open up a floodgate that is trapping water filled with toxic waste, sewage, trash, and chemicals—then that’s what’s going to flow in.  So, too, is it true that when you open your senses to an environment filled with toxic conversations, bull shit, trash talk, and manipulative advertisements—that’s what’s going to flow into your being and is what’s going to affect your thoughts and behaviors.

If however, you open up a floodgate that is trapping filtered, purified, crystal-clear water—then that’s what’s going to flow. Just as a positive, uplifting, supportive environment will flow into your mind if that’s what’s in the environment. Upgrade the environment and you upgrade the incoming information which upgrades your thoughts and of course, upgrades your actions. Environmental variables that could use upgrading include, but are not limited to:

  1. The people you see
  2. The conversations you hear
  3. The images on the screens you stare at
  4. The words you choose to read
  5. The art on your walls
  6. The events you attend
  7. The food in your fridge
  8. The apps on your phone
  9. The e-mails in your inbox
  10. The lyrics you repeat
  11. And the and the list goes on.

Second: Your sensory filters are vitally important and need constant maintenance and attention.

Just as your Brita water filter or your reverse osmosis machine needs a new filter every so often, so too do your sensory filters. What do I mean by sensory filters? I mean the mental processes that allow you to block out the crap and welcome in the good. The filters that allow you to take in only the best of what’s in an environment and keep the rest blocked out.

The challenge, that I’m sure you’d agree with, is that there is SO MUCH CRAP! CRAP television, CRAP gossip, CRAP news, CRAP politics, CRAP apps, CRAP attitudes, CRAP environments (literally just crap and trash in our environments)… But just because there is crap everywhere, that doesn’t mean that you simply give in and let the crap take over!

I wouldn’t stop buying new filters for my water just because it’s time consuming! We need to keep our filters fresh, changed often, and ready to catch crap every day. How? Ways in which you can clean / replace your filters include, but are not limited to:

  1. Meditating
  2. Working Out
  3. Eating clean food
  4. Reading inspiring books
  5. Listening to good music
  6. Spending time in nature
  7. Posting and sharing empowering thoughts
  8. Subscribing to uplifting blogs and podcasts
  9. Talking to people that motivate you and want you to be your best
  10. Cleaning up your environment of trash and keeping the green growing strong
  11. And the list goes on…

Feeling really crappy all of the time?  Upgrade the environment and clean your filters! …And repeat until you feel really damn good!!

Do you have to change everything all at once?

…Not unless you want massive results! The size of the action(s) you take will be proportional to the size of the results you yield.

Take massive action(s) and drastically change your environment or sensory filter and brace yourself for massive results! Take small action(s) and change one or two things about your environment or sensory filter and expect modest results. But, that’s not to say that taking one single step isn’t powerful in it’s own way.

The key is to keep moving forward, every day, with deliberate, positive action(s).  Before you ‘x’ out of this blog—choose at least one thing that you’re going to upgrade about your environment and do it. And if you’re really dedicated, drop us a line down below and make it official so we can all hold you accountable! Good luck!

NEW In The Shop: Don’t Let The Tame Ones Tell You How To Live [Poster]

Why We ♥ It: Some of the best advice I (Matt here) ever got was: don’t take life advice from people who aren’t living a life you want to live and don’t take criticism from people you wouldn’t go to for advice. I created this poster to act as a reminder to listen more closely to our role models and less closely to our critics, trolls, and tamed-comfort-zone-hugger acquaintances. It’s also a perfect gift for the outdoor adventurer, travel enthusiast, or solo explorer (or soon to be). Available in print or digital download. 👇🏼
